I share an intense personal relationship with my computer. Perhaps this digital life form knows even those things about me which even my wife would never be able to know. So obsessed am I with its health, that I almost religiously scan it everyday with antivirus software and the Spyware Doctor. The very thought that this cherished friend will someday get old and may perhaps lose its memory gives me fits of anxiety. So, as a safety precaution, I back up all the vital segments of my personal data on a regular basis.
Family Photographs
My family photographs are the bright splashes of colour on my monitor that make me laugh and cry, hope and despair, cherish and regret. I know that some of my family members are not going to be with us forever. Still, if I take ample care to backup these photographs, I would certainly be able to revive those intense emotional moments when one likes to weep and sob, sitting in a dimly lit cozy room.
For instance, how can I forget to backup my marriage photographs. I can still see the pinkish hue, which the feeling of being in love leaves on one’s face, still glowing fresh on the face of my wife. No doubt, I would prefer to save it forever to show it to my grandchildren.
Last but certainly not the least, the snaps of all our canine and feline family members definitely deserves to be archived - those soft figures of fur, which came into our life, and filled it with affection, love and warmth. Definitely, I am willing to pay anything to backup these golden hued memories.
My Personal Diary
Every other person believes that the story of his life would definitely make a good novel. And I am no exception to this rule. Since I cannot rely too much on my memory, I have saved a large part of my personal diary on my computer. Those unbridled missions of adventure savored in the university days, those pangs of pain and hurt on being rejected by girls, those moments of elation on being chosen as the student editor of our college magazine, those youthful days of job-seeking and struggle, the sense of stability on finding that one true love I was always looking for, and a verbal record of thousands of other short and long paragraphs from my life are meticulously saved in my computer’s hard drive.
Songs and Video Files
I passionately believe in the fact that music is the food for the soul. Sometimes, I feel that my life is one mammoth Hollywood movie with an appropriate song playing in the background of every sweet and sour moment. I seem to have a song for every moment and this big collection has expanded over the years. Diligently and painstakingly collecting all these rare compositions has cost me almost a fortune. Some of the video clippings of the live performances by Elvis Presley and enigmatic Jim Morrison are so dear to me that I would never trade them for anything. All those rhythms of heaven do deserve to be backed up and archived.
Though I have backed up all this precious data using a blend of storage media like CDs and flash drives, I am contemplating about buying a portable hard drive with a reasonable memory. This will enable me to save all this information in one single gadget. Realistically speaking, the probability of both my hard drives failing at one go is next to negligible. Still, if this happens, I will have all my vital data backed up on an array of CDs and pen drives.
Certainly backing up all this data on a regular basis is more of an effort, but the prospect of losing it to a hard drive crash would be far worse. Though not a computer nerd, I am quite aware of the risks involved in saving data on a hard drive. With all my data doubly backed up to meet any eventuality, I can afford to move ahead in life with a sense of peace.
